Goldeneye Rogue Agent (XBOX) Review

With the advent of 007 Everything or Nothing, it looked as though EA had bucked up its ideas, and was now seeming to be able to deliver a definitive bond experience. EA then decided to go from third-person Bond, to first-person again and decided to make a game with the word "Goldeneye" in it. Yes, thats right, the word that is associated with the N64 as being one of the best FPS games of all time, not to mention a worthy game fitting to the Bond license. So EA tried to tried to climb a mountain and achieve greatness but to be quite honest, even a bond villain would be horrified at the result.

Goldeneye Rogue Agent is a FPS that casts you as an agent called Goldeneye who has been dismissed from MI6 and has been recruited by Auric Goldfinger to fight against the nefarious Dr.No. "Oh cool! So that means I play a Bond villian" I hear you say. Sadly, though, that's about the most exciting prospect of the game.

Firstly, the graphics, they're frankly, not very good. The surroundings are bland, the soldiers are very generic (even for goons), and the guns are just about ok as far as graphics are concerened. The surroundings very rarely change, and when they do, its usually replaced with a slightly different looking corridor or rooftop or facility, for a game like this, that shouldn't really be the case.

Next, the gameplay. The gameplay is just essentially, run run run, shoot, run, shoot, shoot, run. There are no real objectives, just endless waves of guards to kill, broken up by the occasional tank/helicopter/friendly. It even borrows the "augmentations" from games like Deus Ex such as the Polarity Shield (as known to Deus Ex players as the Ballistic Shield, which also appears in Project Snowblind). The only real redeeming feature is the ability to take enemies and use them as human shields, but even this was borrowed from a recent, poorly made, die hard game. The sound and the voices are reasonably well done but its no big deal considering the problems with the rest of the game.

As far as replay value is concerned there are several difficulties, and there are also unlockables for each and every level completed provided you have enough points and can get enough symbols when the points are tallied. However most are things like art for the levels and things like that. If you really are a glutton for punishment then you can try to go and get all the rewards, though theres no real reason to seeing as playing the game through the first time was bad enough.

In truth, although the game has a couple of good points, its still not one I can recommend.

Graphics: 6

Competant graphics marred by the "Identi-kit" corridors

Gameplay: 5

Shoot, Run, Duck, Shoot and run again. Practically brainless shooting with no real objectives.

Sound: 8

Probably the only part of the game thats actually quite well done.

Lifespan: 3

A few collectables and various amount of difficulties, but only if you actually enjoyed the first play through.

Influence: +5

I like Bond movies, I liked EA's Bond game "Everything or Nothing" and I like First Person Shooters, this should have been a dream game for me.

Overall: 4

This game is so bad, that sometimes I think that it must have been a joke gone wrong. Avoid.
